The surrounding legend HISPANIARVM ET INDIARVM (Of Spain and the Indies) runs along the outer border, also within a beaded rim. The design is typical of the cob-style coinage struck at the Mexico City mint during the reign of Charles I and Joanna. The strike is irregular, as expected of hammered planchet coinage of this early colonial period. |
