When Agustín de Iturbide was proclaimed Emperor of Mexico in July 1822, the political shockwave reached Guatemala City almost immediately. The Central American provinces, freshly independent from Spain, faced a genuine question of whether to annex themselves to the new Mexican empire or chart their own course. This coin was struck at the Guatemala mint as proclamation coinage — a ceremonial issue produced specifically to mark Iturbide's recognition, thrown to crowds during public celebrations in a tradition inherited directly from Spanish colonial practice.
Iturbide's empire collapsed by March 1823, making the entire political episode this coin commemorates one of the shortest-lived imperial projects in the Americas.
