Issued to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the Banco Central do Brasil, which was established by Law 4,595 on December 31, 1964 — a piece of legislation that reorganized the entire Brazilian financial system and abolished the Superintendência da Moeda e do Crédito (SUMOC) that had performed central banking functions since 1945. The BCB began operations in March 1965, inheriting a monetary environment already strained by the chronic inflation that would plague Brazil for decades to come.
The Real itself only entered circulation in 1994 as the anchor of the Plano Real, meaning this denomination has existed for fewer than half of the institution's sixty years.
