| Obverse description | Within the stainless steel centre, a stylised depiction of the twin-tower headquarters of the Banco Central do Brasil in Brasília occupies the right portion of the field, rendered in fine relief with a geometric grid pattern representing the building's facade. To the left, the commemorative inscription '50 ANOS' (50 Years) appears in large numerals and text, with the mint mark of the Banco Central below. The bronze-coloured outer ring carries the circular legend 'BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL' flanked by the founding year '1965' at upper left and the commemorative year '2015' at lower right, separated by raised dots. |

| Additional information |
The Banco Central do Brasil was established in December 1964 under the military government of Castelo Branco, replacing the Superintendência da Moeda e do Crédito (SUMOC) as the country's monetary authority. Its founding came during a period of serious fiscal instability, and one of its earliest mandates was taming inflation that had been running above 80% annually. That inflation problem would remain unresolved for another three decades, making the 50-year anniversary something of a complicated milestone to commemorate — the institution spent roughly the first half of its existence failing at its core function before the 1994 Plano Real finally stabilized the currency.
