The Real was introduced on July 1, 1994, as the centerpiece of the Plano Real — an economic stabilization program designed by Finance Minister Fernando Henrique Cardoso to end the hyperinflation that had been destroying Brazilian purchasing power for years. At its worst, annual inflation had exceeded 2,000 percent. The plan worked; within months, prices stabilized in a way no previous attempt had managed.
This 2019 commemorative marks the currency's 25th anniversary. The bimetallic format echoes the standard circulation coinage introduced in the 1990s reforms.
