Costa Rica's Casa Nacional de Moneda was operating under severe constraints by the mid-1840s — chronic silver shortages and political instability following independence from the Central American Federation meant output was irregular and dies were often reused well past their useful life. The 1847 issue of this denomination falls within a period when the mint at San José was still establishing consistent production standards, and survivors in anything above circulated condition are genuinely uncommon.
