| 裏面の説明 | The reverse displays an incuse, mirror-image impression of the obverse type, a characteristic feature of bracteate-style or single-punch hammered coinage of this period. The shield of Upper Alsace appears in sunken relief, reversed left-to-right relative to the obverse, surrounded by the same inner circle and outer beaded border. No legend is present on either face. |

Leopold V ruled Upper Alsace as Archduke from 1619 until his death in 1632, a period consumed almost entirely by the opening devastation of the Thirty Years' War. The region changed hands repeatedly as Swedish, French, and Imperial forces moved through Alsace, and small billon coinage of this type saw hard use — or no use at all — depending on which army currently controlled the Rhine crossings.
At .375 fine, these pieces sit near the floor of what could reasonably be called silver coinage. The Kipper- und Wipperzeit currency crisis of 1619–1622 had already debased small denominations across the German states before Leopold's issues even reached full circulation.
