Lucerne struck cantonal copper in 1839 under a system already in its death throes. The Federal Coinage Act of 1850 would abolish cantonal monetary authority entirely, consolidating Switzerland under a single federal currency — making issues like this among the last produced by Lucerne's own mint authority. The 1839 date places this piece in the final decade of that independence.
