| Additional information |
Bern struck its own cantonal coinage under the Mediation Act framework that Napoleon imposed on Switzerland in 1803, which restored limited sovereignty to the cantons after the short-lived Helvetic Republic had centralized everything. This 1 Rappen belongs to that window of cantonal monetary autonomy that closed permanently when the Swiss Confederation established federal coinage in 1850, rendering issues like this one obsolete within a generation of their last striking.
