Schwyz was among the founding cantons of the Swiss Confederation, and its independent coinage authority persisted well into the early modern period despite recurring pressure from neighboring cantons to standardize currency across the Confederation. The mid-seventeenth century saw Swiss cantonal mints producing billon issues of notoriously variable fineness, with Schwyz among the smaller operations — output was limited, dies were reused aggressively, and surviving pieces in any condition above heavily worn are genuinely scarce. At 0.27 g, these were the smallest denomination the canton struck, and attrition rates were correspondingly brutal.
