Obverse description A finely detailed King Protea (Protea cynaroides) in full bloom occupies the centre of the field, its characteristic rounded flowerhead and radiating bracts rendered in high relief. The engraver's initials ALS appear in the lower field beneath the bloom. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs across the upper periphery in large Latin capitals, while the date 1997 is positioned in the lower exergual area. A beaded border frames the entire design.

Additional information

The 1997 "Women of South Africa" rand was issued in the early years of post-apartheid reconstruction, a period when the South African Mint actively redirected its commemorative program toward figures and themes previously excluded from official coinage under the National Party government. Silver proof issues from this transitional decade were produced in comparatively modest numbers and sold primarily through subscription sets rather than open retail channels.
