South Africa's switch from silver to nickel for the Rand denomination came as the rand itself was under sustained pressure — the country's international isolation deepened through the late 1970s and 1980s, driving up the cost of maintaining a silver circulating coinage. The nickel substitute was the pragmatic answer to a political problem as much as an economic one.
