This coin is one piece in the South African Mint's multi-part commemorative series marking Nelson Mandela's life, released the year after his death in December 2013. The "Early Years" installment covers the period of Mandela's youth in Qunu and his early political formation through the ANC Youth League, which he helped found in 1944 alongside Walter Sisulu and Oliver Tambo.
