| Obverse description | A finely detailed depiction of a King Protea (Protea cynaroides) in full bloom occupies the central field, its characteristic dome-shaped flowerhead and radiating bracts rendered with pronounced sculptural relief. The legend SOUTH AFRICA curves along the upper periphery, while the date 2011 is inscribed in the lower exergue. The engraver's initials ALS appear discreetly in the lower field beneath the flower. The overall composition is executed in a polished proof finish, creating a strong contrast between the frosted device and the mirror field. |

J.M. Coetzee won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003, only the second South African to do so after Nadine Gordimer in 1991. This issue belongs to South Africa's "Great South Africans" commemorative rand series, which the SA Mint has used sporadically since the early 2000s to honor cultural and intellectual figures — a notable departure for a mint whose output had long been dominated by wildlife and political themes.
