| Reverse description | The reverse presents a richly composed allegorical tableau of five South African national symbols arranged across the field to commemorate a decade of democracy. At upper left, the Blue Crane (Anthropoides paradiseus), South Africa's national bird, stands in profile; to the upper right, the head of a Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) with curved horns is depicted in high relief, with Yellow Wood tree foliage arching above. In the lower centre, a Galjoen fish (Dichistius capensis) is portrayed in detailed relief, while a King Protea bloom appears at lower right. The denomination R1 and the commemorative date range 1994-2004 are inscribed within the design, with the engraver's initials AM at the base. |
