Issued to commemorate the centennial of the Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1894 during the long Liberal Reform period that reshaped the country's export economy around coffee. The Chamber was one of several mercantile institutions established as Guatemala integrated more deeply into international commodity markets under presidents Barrios and his successors.
The .900 silver specification follows the old Latin Monetary Union standard — an intentional nod, common in Guatemalan commemoratives of this decade, to a monetary tradition the country never formally joined.
