Guatemala's quetzal-denominated silver issues of this period were part of a broader Latin American collector series trend in the early 2000s, produced primarily for the numismatic export market rather than domestic circulation. KM#288 was struck in limited quantities and never entered everyday commerce — virtually all known survivors are in original mint packaging.
