The "Caballo" quetzal series was issued to commemorate the Mayan Long Count calendar and pre-Columbian heritage, but the horse motif on this particular piece reflects a distinct design strand within Guatemalan commemorative coinage of the late 1990s — a period when the Banco de Guatemala was actively expanding its collector program following the 1993 constitutional crisis that ousted President Serrano Elías. Mintages in this series were kept deliberately low for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
