The P#59 series ran for over a decade, a relatively long production life for a Guatemalan issue of this denomination. Thomas De La Rue held the contract for Guatemalan currency through much of the mid-twentieth century, and the consistency of that relationship meant plate designs often persisted well past their original intended replacement dates — which likely explains the unusually broad 1972–1983 date range for a single pick number.
Watermark-only security on a circulating note by this period was already considered minimal; Guatemala would move toward more complex security specifications in later De La Rue contracts.
