Urban VIII declared the Holy Year of 1625 — one of the first Jubilees he would preside over as pope, having been elected in August 1623. The "open door" designation refers to the ceremonial opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter's, which Urban performed on Christmas Eve 1624 to inaugurate the Jubilee year. Quattrini of this type circulated heavily among the enormous pilgrim traffic flooding Rome, which makes worn survivors far more common than sharp ones.
