Obverse description Central device depicts the papal coat of arms of Urban VIII (Barberini family), surmounted by the papal tiara (triregnum) and crossed keys of Saint Peter, rendered in low hammered relief. The shield bears the Barberini bees heraldic motif. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading VRBANVS VIII PONT MAX A II, identifying Urban VIII as Supreme Pontiff in his second pontifical year. The overall composition is characteristic of early seventeenth-century Roman hammered copper coinage, with an irregular flan and bold but somewhat crude die work.
