Obverse description Central field displays the papal arms of Pope Pius VII — a quartered shield bearing the Chiaramonti family heraldic devices — surmounted by the papal tiara and flanked by the crossed keys of Saint Peter, rendered in low relief. The shield is supported by elaborate foliate and scroll mantling. The circular Latin legend surrounding the design reads PONTIFICAT. ANNO XVI, denoting the regnal year of the pontificate, with QVATTRINO indicating the denomination. The overall design is characteristic of the Roman minting tradition of the early nineteenth century, with a beaded border encircling the composition.
