| Descrizione del dritto | Central device comprising the large papal arms of Pope Pius VI, rendered as a quartered shield featuring a striped lower field and charges including fleurs-de-lis and a lion passant, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter with elaborate baroque cartouche surrounds. The shield is flanked by ornate scrollwork and supported within a beaded inner border. The circular Latin legend reads PIVS VI PONT M, distributed around the periphery of the field. Pius VI inherited the papal finances in a state of chronic disorder, and his early coinage reforms in Bologna reflected an urgent need to rationalize the subsidiary copper supply across the Legation. The "striped field" variety — distinguished by horizontal lines in the shield's background — emerged from a brief die experiment at the Bologna mint, accounting for its scarcity relative to the plain-field type catalogued under the same reign.
Bologna operated as a semi-autonomous mint within the Papal States, and local die-cutters occasionally introduced decorative variations without explicit Roman sanction.
