Fano's mint operated under papal authority with a long history of producing small billon issues for local circulation, but Pius V — the Dominican friar elected in 1566 who would be canonized in 1712 — made no secret of his desire to rationalize and reduce the proliferation of minor coinages across the Papal States. That this quattrino continued to be struck through his entire reign suggests local commercial pressure won out over curial preference for uniformity.
