Maria Beatrice d'Este inherited the Duchy of Massa and Principality of Carrara through her mother, Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina, and ruled jointly with her husband Ercole III d'Este of Modena. By 1792, the marriage had effectively made the tiny duchy an Este satellite, though Maria Beatrice retained nominal sovereignty over Massa-Carrara and continued issuing coins in her own name. The duchy fell to Napoleonic forces just four years after this piece was struck, ending coinage there entirely.
