Gregory XIII is best remembered for the 1582 calendar reform that bears his name, but his pontificate also coincided with a period of aggressive reassertion of papal authority over peripheral mints like Fano, which had operated with considerable autonomy under earlier popes. The Fano mint's output was modest and largely utilitarian in scope, serving local circulation in the Marche rather than broader papal commerce.
Billon issues of this type frequently show uneven alloy distribution, a known characteristic of the Fano workshop rather than a strike anomaly.
