| Additional information |
Francesco Maria I della Rovere had one of the most turbulent tenures of any Renaissance duke — excommunicated by Julius II in 1510, driven out by Leo X in 1516, and only restored to Urbino in 1521 after the Medici pope's death. The quattrino was the workhorse of small daily transactions throughout the duchy, and billon issues of this type circulated hard through decades of political instability, military occupation, and papal interference. Most survivors show it.
