Clement XIII's pontificate was consumed almost entirely by the Jesuit crisis — the Society of Jesus was being expelled from Portugal, France, and Spain in rapid succession, and his stubborn refusal to suppress the order defined every political relationship Rome had during these years. The Gubbio mint, a minor provincial operation within the Papal States, continued striking small copper for local commerce largely indifferent to the theological storm above it.
Quattrini from Gubbio in this period are notably scarce in problem-free condition; the local copper was soft and the coins circulated hard in a town with no particular reason to preserve them.
