| Reverse description | A nimbate frontal bust of Saint Ambrose, patron of Milan, is depicted at centre, his episcopal vestments suggested by the style of the portrait. The initials A and 3 (for Azzone Visconti, lord of Milan) flank the bust to left and right respectively, serving as a mintmaster or issuer attribution. The whole is contained within a reeded inner circle, with the surrounding uncial Latin legend naming the saint. The reverse typology follows the established Visconti devotional convention of invoking the city's patron saint on civic coinage. |
