Alexander VII — Fabio Chigi — secured the papacy in 1655 after one of the longest conclaves of the century, lasting eighty days. His reign coincided with intense theological friction over Jansenism, and his eventual condemnation of Jansenist propositions in 1656 defined much of his early pontificate politically. Gubbio's mint operated as a minor peripheral facility within the papal territories, producing small copper for local circulation rather than prestige.
The Virgo Concipiet type draws on Isaiah 7:14, a verse with charged doctrinal weight during a period when Marian devotion was being actively promoted by Rome as a counter-Reformation instrument.
