Obverse description Papal arms of Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi) displayed on a shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, the emblems of the Holy See. The Chigi family coat of arms features six hills (monti) topped by an eight-pointed star, rendered in low relief characteristic of hammered copper coinage. The shield is flanked by decorative foliate mantling and the whole device is contained within a plain inner circle bordered by an outer beaded rim. The abbreviated Latin legend ALEXAN. VII. P. M. runs around the periphery, identifying the issuing pontiff.
