Obverse description Rampant lion passant to left, raised on its haunches in the heraldic tradition of the Pico family arms, depicted in high relief against a plain field. The beast's forepaws are raised and appear to clutch an object, with its mane and tail rendered in a stylized, somewhat crude manner consistent with early seventeenth-century Italian hammered coinage. No legend or inscription is present on this side.

Reverse description The city name MIRANDOLA, the seat of the Duchy, is boldly inscribed in three horizontal lines across the field in large Roman capital letters reading MI / RANDO / LA, with a small ornamental floral or foliate device visible above the first line. The legend is contained within a beaded inner border, and the overall design is stark and legible, typical of the minor copper coinage of the Italian states in the early Baroque period.
