Beschrijving keerzijde A thorny tree with flowering branches and intertwined limbs rises from the base of the field, its spreading boughs extending across the coin's surface. The tree is framed by ornamental scrollwork and foliate volutes arrayed around the periphery, creating a decorative border. This device is the dynastic emblem of the Cybo-Malaspina family and is rendered in the bold, somewhat rustic style typical of hammered copper issues of this period. The field is plain, with no additional inscription or legend present.

Aanvullende informatie

Alberico I Cybo-Malaspina ruled Massa and Carrara for over five decades, an unusually long tenure that saw him navigate the competing pressures of Spanish hegemony in northern Italy and the ambitions of neighboring Genoese banking families. The quattrino was the lowest denomination in regular circulation — a coin handled daily by market vendors and laborers rather than merchants or nobles, which explains why surviving examples in any presentable state are genuinely scarce.
