Obverse description A bold cross pattée dominates the central field, its arms extending nearly to the inner beaded or plain border. A small crossed escutcheon, bearing the arms of Arezzo, is positioned above the cross at twelve o'clock. The surrounding circular legend reads ARRETIVM in Roman capitals, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The hammered flan is irregular in shape, typical of mid-sixteenth-century Italian municipal coinage. The overall engraving is bold but somewhat crude, consistent with provincial workshop production.
