Giovanni Soranzo's dogeship coincided with one of Venice's most strategically active periods in the Adriatic and Aegean, but the quartarolo itself predates his reign — the denomination was introduced under Jacopo Tiepolo in the 1230s as a fractional billon piece for small daily transactions, filling the gap between the silver grosso and the near-worthless copper coinage. By Soranzo's time the type was already decades old and deeply embedded in petty commerce. The Biaggi 2806 attribution places this firmly within his documented issues.
