Victor Amadeus II was only fourteen in 1680, with his mother Marie Jeanne Baptiste of Savoy-Nemours ruling as regent — a arrangement he would spend the following decade trying to escape. The quadrupla was the premier gold denomination of the Savoyard monetary system, and issues from the regency period are distinguishable from those struck after Victor Amadeus wrested personal control from his mother in 1684.
Mintage for this type was modest, and survivors in any condition are infrequently offered. The Turin mint produced these under considerable political tension, with French influence over the duchy at its peak during this precise window.
