Obverse description The elaborate papal arms of Pope Paul V occupy the central field, displayed on a baroque shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of St. Peter. The shield itself bears the Borghese family eagle above a dragon, flanked by ornate supporters. The heraldic composition is rendered in high relief in the characteristic style of early seventeenth-century Roman engraving. The circular Latin legend naming the pontiff and his regnal year runs along the periphery.

Reverse description Saint Paul, nimbed and draped in flowing robes, is depicted seated to the right upon a low throne or plinth, holding an open book or epistle in his right hand while a tall sword — his traditional apostolic attribute — rises vertically behind him. A small papal arms shield appears in the lower right field. The figure is rendered with dignity and classical gravitas characteristic of early Baroque Roman ecclesiastical coinage. The surrounding Latin legend identifying the apostle and the city of Rome runs along the inner border.
