Ariminum (modern Rimini) was one of the earliest Latin colonies established on the Adriatic coast, founded in 268 BC — the same year this series is believed to have begun. The colony's aes grave production was tied directly to Rome's expanding monetary infrastructure in northern Italy, issued under Roman authority to facilitate troop pay and commerce along the Via Flaminia corridor before that road was even formally completed.
At 58mm and approaching 150 grams, these are physically demanding pieces to strike consistently, and Ariminum's output shows it — surface porosity and casting irregularities are endemic to the type, not signs of damage.
