This piece was struck as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran through the 1970s and commissioned member states to issue circulating coinage carrying agricultural themes. Saudi Arabia's participation coincided with a period of aggressive domestic food security investment — the Kingdom was simultaneously pouring oil revenues into massive irrigation schemes in the Najd, attempting to cultivate wheat in the desert at extraordinary cost.
FAO issues from this period often saw limited secondary circulation, distributed partly through program channels rather than normal banking. Many survive in above-average condition for that reason.
