The Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency issued a revised qirsh series in the mid-2000s following a long-running internal debate about whether to fully retire the qirsh denomination or retain it alongside the halalat system. The dual designation on this coin — one qirsh and five halalat simultaneously — reflects the awkward arithmetic of a currency reform never fully completed, with both units remaining technically legal but one effectively vestigial in daily commerce.
