This issue marks the transition point at which Saudi Arabia began formally denominating coins in halalas — a subunit introduced to modernize the currency system ahead of the oil-boom fiscal expansion of the 1970s. The dual denomination inscription, equating 1 qirsh with 5 halalas, was a deliberate public education measure embedded directly into the coinage as the new unit was phased in.
