Kohandil Khan, the Barakzai ruler of Qandahar, lost the city to Shah Shuja and British-backed forces during the First Anglo-Afghan War before recovering it following the 1842 British withdrawal — one of the most catastrophic retreats in colonial military history. These rupees belong to his second tenure, struck as he reasserted Barakzai control over a city that had changed hands violently and recently. Qandahar at this point operated as a semi-independent principality, its coinage reflecting a political reality distinct from Kabul.
The KM#182.1 attribution distinguishes this from related Qandahari issues of the same period by die characteristics rather than compositional differences.
