The 1 Pula entered circulation as Botswana's smallest denomination note at a time when the pula itself was still a young currency — introduced only in 1976 to replace the rand at par, marking the country's formal monetary separation from South Africa. De La Rue handled the entire early pula series, a common arrangement for newly independent southern African states that lacked domestic printing infrastructure.
P.S. Mmusi served concurrently as Vice President of Botswana during his tenure as Finance Minister, an unusual doubling of roles that reflected how thin the senior administrative layer was in Gaborone at the time.
