Nadir Shah's reign was short and violent — he seized power in 1929 after ousting Habibullah Kalakani, who had himself ruled for only nine months following Amanullah Khan's forced abdication. This pul was struck during a deliberate monetary retrenchment, as Nadir Shah moved to stabilize Afghanistan's currency after years of civil disruption had rendered much of the existing coinage supply unreliable. He was assassinated by a student in 1933, making his numismatic output limited in both variety and duration.
