| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a richly composed commemorative scene honouring the centennial of the Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg-Maatschappij (NZASM) railway. At centre, a period steam locomotive emerges from a stylised tunnel portal framed within a symbolic toothed gear, evoking industrial progress. The railway tracks extend forward over a detailed bridge, representing the spanning of geographical and international boundaries. The design is attributed to engraver Brian Hartland, whose initials BH appear in the field. The legend PROTEA 1oz Au and the engraver's initials are inscribed in the lower portion of the reverse. |
