正面描述 Counterstamp of the City of Amberg applied to a Bohemian Prague Groschen host coin. The counterstamp, punched into the obverse field, depicts an oval cartouche or shield bearing the Amberg civic device, surrounded by the remnants of the original Prague Groschen legend in Latin uncial characters encircling the design. The underlying host coin retains traces of the Bohemian royal crown and double-tailed lion associated with Prague Groschen coinage of the period. The flan is irregular and characteristic of hammered medieval silver coinage.

附加信息

Amberg, a silver-mining town in the Upper Palatinate, periodically counterstamped foreign coins to authorize their local circulation rather than mint its own. The Prague Groschen — struck in enormous quantities at Kutná Hora under the Bohemian crown — flooded regional markets throughout the late 14th and early 15th centuries, making it the obvious candidate for such treatment. The Amberg counterstamp effectively redenominated or re-validated the host coin for municipal use.

The date range spans the reign of Wenceslaus IV and into the Hussite period, when Bohemian coin production became increasingly disrupted.
