The Inter-Parliamentary Union's 1997 conference in Cairo was the 98th such assembly, and Egypt's hosting of it carried pointed domestic significance — President Mubarak had been working to rehabilitate Egypt's standing in the Arab world following the country's post-Camp David isolation. Silver commemoratives of this type were produced in small quantities for the collector market and saw essentially no circulation.
