Two concentric beaded rings divide the field into zones: the central roundel bears the denomination legend VALUE / ONE / POUND in three lines of bold, slightly curved capital letters. The annular band between the inner and outer beaded borders carries the weight and fineness specifications. The outer legend reads WEIGHT 5 DWT: 15 GRS: around the upper portion and 22 CARATS along the lower portion, with decorative rosette stops at the lower left and right. The design's emphasis on weight, fineness, and value reflects the assay office's primary mandate of certifying the gold content of locally produced coinage during the South Australian gold rush period. |

South Australia's Government Assay Office produced this pound in 1852 to address a practical emergency: gold from the Victorian rushes was flooding into Adelaide faster than it could be exported or exchanged through official channels. The colonial administration had no legal authority to strike coinage — that right remained with the Crown — making this issue technically illegal tender under British law, though it circulated anyway out of sheer necessity.
The Colonial Office in London moved quickly to suppress local gold issues across the Australian colonies, and production was short-lived. Surviving examples are rare by any measure.
