The Union Bank of Scotland had its roots in the 1830 merger of several Glasgow-based banking concerns, and by the time this note was issued it was among the larger Scottish joint-stock banks — though still operating under the old Scottish free banking tradition of private note issue. That tradition persisted well into the twentieth century, long after England had consolidated issue under the Bank of England.
Waterlow & Sons handled security printing for a wide range of British and colonial issuers during this period. The Union Bank was absorbed into the Bank of Scotland in 1955, extinguishing a note-issuing lineage of over a century.
