Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community in 1957, this coin carries particular irony: Cyprus joined the EU in 2004 but would not adopt the euro until January 2008, meaning this commemorative was struck in the final full year the Cypriot pound existed as legal tender. The following year, the pound was demonetized entirely.
